YbInCu4 exhibits an isostructural valence transition qualitatively similar to that observed at the gamma-alpha transition in elemental Ce. We have prepared single crystals of this compound and related materials, and here we discuss the emerging understanding of the physics of these systems. In particular, the thermodynamics of the valence transition will be discussed, and its response to chemical doping, external magnetic fields, and applied physical pressure will be reviewed. The existence of a single underlying energy scale associated with the valence transition can be inferred from these data. Low carrier concentration seems to play a central role in the physics of the valence transition and this will be demonstrated by discussing related YbXCu4 materials (where X is a semi-metal or late transition metal) that display a wide range of physical properties.
