摘要
A rigorous theory of phonon-assisted transitions near the direct band gap of semiconductors is developed and applied to the case of laser refrigeration. The theory shows that phonon-assisted absorption can be adequately described as state filling and that it is this state filling that limits the efficiency of laser cooling.
