Technology update

Although ultrasound is a mature imaging method, new developments in ultrasound technology promise exciting features and expanded uses in diagnosis and treatment. Major improvements in image contrast and spatial resolution and three-dimensional data acquisition and display have recently become generally available. Novel methods such as hybrid detector arrays and elastography are moving rapidly toward clinical application. Contrast agents permitting improved flow detection, perfusion imaging, and assessment of tumor angiogenesis indicate a potential role for ultrasound in the evaluation of antiangiogenesis therapies. These new approaches are likely to substantially improve the value of ultrasound in diagnosis and screening.
