A plea for more careful presentation of near-surface air temperature data in geomorphology

Geornorphologists often provide near-surface air temperature data for their study sites in publications. This is usually in the form of mean annual or monthly temperature. Inspection of papers in Earth Surface Processes and Landforms for 2004, 2005 and 2006 has shown that the source of these data is usually not given. Problems arise because scientists derive 'mean temperature' in different ways, which do not give the same result. It is suggested that a protocol is followed when presenting near-surface air temperature data for journal publication as part of site descriptions or results.
