摘要
Understanding the role of colloids in the environment needs more complete characterization of their size and shape than the hydrodynamic diameter usually used. Novel methodology for three-dimensional description of colloids has been successfully established in this work by coupling flow-field flow fractionation (FIFFF) to multi-angle laser-light scattering (MALLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The methodology was evaluated for a soil colloid sample. Results showed that particle surface areas determined by FIFFF-MALLS-TEM are 3-4 times greater than those calculated using the hydrodynamic diameter determined by FIFFF. Further, results indicated that surface area/volume values are 3-5 times greater than those calculated on the basis of the hydrodynamic diameter. A correction factor must therefore be applied when particle surface area is calculated from the hydrodynamic diameter determined by FIFFF.
