PC based power management systems implemented in conjunction with the latest microprocessor based protective relays have enabled Power Distribution System Operators and Owners to view and understand the operating dynamics of their systems in new and unique ways. The multifunctional relays and meters have enabled a reduction in the number of components and increased the reliability of the power distribution systems. The PC based software allows for setpoint adjustments, parameter trending, waveform analysis, and event recording with time-date stamping. This paper will review the design and installation, field experience, derived benefits of, and plans for expansion of a system installed at a cement plant. The system includes features such as an interactive one-line diagram that can show system parameters at a glance, monitoring of the 69 kV, 13.2 kV, and 4.16 kV distribution systems, as well as the large synchronous ball mill and other medium voltage motors utilized in the cement manufacture process.
