Does the peak in the magnetic susceptibility determine the in-plane infrared conductivity of YBCO? A theoretical study

We present results of calculations of the in-plane far-infrared conductivity of optimum doped YBa2Cu3O7-delta in the normal and in the superconducting states. The computations include inelastic scattering of planar quasiparticles by spin fluctuations, which are described by the spin susceptibility in the form of the magnetic peak observed by neutron scattering. The superconducting gap is assumed to have d(x2-y2) symmetry. Both the real and the imaginary parts of the self-energy are evaluated and used in computing the conductivity. The trends observed in experiments are well reproduced and a simple interpretation of the mid-infrared absorption in the normal and in the superconducting states is obtained.
