This review examines the evidence for and against initial cytoreductive radical nephrectomy as a treatment approach to patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma. Single institution series and the results of randomized phase III trials that have addressed cytoreductive nephrectomy are examined, with the goal of determining the indications, contraindications, and evidence for patient benefit.
