Myrobacterium tuberculosis expresses universal stress proteins (USPs) when its growth is retarded by oxygen depletion. This class of proteins is emerging as being important in the resistance of bacteria to stress and prolonged growth arrest. Here we assess the properties of USPs and their relevance to mycobacteria.
