摘要
Billions of microorganisms inevitably flow into ballast tanks during normal operations to balance cargo on a ship. Is it possible to treat that water in such a way as to kill or remove all organisms while maintaining the tanks' structural integrity? Some argue that treatment is pointless because the organisms are already ubiquitously distributed around the world. Fred C. Dobbs at Old Dominion University and Andrew Rogerson at Nova Southeastern University explore the issues. © 2005 American Chemical Society.
