We developed a new type of light-emitting-diodes in which the emission layer is confined inside an Aluminium channel. A 1200 Angstrom Aluminium layer was first deposited on glass by vacuum evaporation and then carved using microlithography techniques. Channels were typically 1.5 mu m width. A 2000 Angstrom thick electroluminescent polymer film was spin coated on top of the Al channel. The diode emits light under alternative voltages. It can be seen under room illumination. We studied current-voltage characteristics and LED quantum efficiency. Electroluminescence results from a field ionization and recombination process. No charge injection at electrodes takes place in such device.
