摘要
Aluminum-lithium welds have been found to be susceptible to fusion boundary cracking due to the presence of an unusual nondendritic equiaxed grain zone adjacent to the fusion boundary. In this paper, the nature of equiaxed zone (EQZ) formation is reported by studying the effect of the initial base metal microstructure. The EQZ was found to be strongly influenced by the base metal microstructure. No EQZ was observed in welds made on an as-cast substrate; however, welds on material in the T8 temper, annealed and as-cast/solution heat treated conditions all exhibited an EQZ. A unified mechanism for EQZ formation in AI-LI welds based on nondendritic solidification along the fusion boundary will be presented.
