This study directly compared the behavior of adult human and canine and young bovine (calf) chondrocytes in porous type I and a collagen matrices. Certain characteristics of the cells varied among these groups, with the calf cells being relatively heterogeneous, There was a similar trend, however, in the behavior of the cells in the matrices with a majority of the cells in the type II sponge retaining their chondrocytic characteristics. Collagen production by chondrocytes in matrices, as assessed by SDS-PAGE, also varied with the chemistry of the matrix.
