Studies suggest that several agents may be useful treatments for alopecia areata. Alopecia areata that is extensive or is associated with atopy is the hardest to treat and may require long-term therapy to establish and maintain cosmetic hair growth. Efficacy, long-term safety, and cost are all significant considerations in choosing a treatment.
