Time-series evidence on growth and the environment suggests an environmental Kuznets curve (EKC), whereas longitudinal studies fail to produce robust estimates for the EKC. This paper offers a theoretical explanation for these apparently contradicting findings, and theoretical guidance for future empirical work. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
