摘要
Despite growing recognition of the problem, the obesity epidemic continues in the United States, affecting every segment of the population and increasing the risk of many chronic diseases. Obesity rates are also increasing around the world. Approximately 34% of U.S. adults and 15% to 20% of children and adolescents are obese. The obesity epidemic arose gradually, apparently from a small, consistent degree of positive energy balance. Substantial public health efforts are being directed toward addressing obesity, but without clear evidence of success yet, and it may be one of the most difficult public health issues our society has faced.
