摘要
The detailed survey of surfaces, such as are found in caves, buildings or excavation sections, is an important aspect of archaeological data collection and investigation. Where subtle irregularities of the contours of the surface have a significance to the interpretation of an archaeological feature, and where contact with the surface is not recommended, standard surveying techniques may not provide the resolution or accuracy which might be hoped for. This study uses an automated laser scanner and modelling software to produce an accurate three-dimensional model of a carved rock surface from the Upper Palaeolithic site of Cap Blanc in southwest France. This non-invasive procedure provides a means of documenting and visualizing a complex carving, and therefore contributes to the interpretation and archiving of the site. Copyright 2001 Academic Press
