(Chemical Equation Presented) With an iron will: Terminal alkynes undergo reaction with aryl and heteroaryl iodides in the presence of an iron catalyst formed from FeCl3 and N,N′-dimethylethylenediamine (dmeda, see scheme). The method displays a broad substrate scope and is economical, environmentally friendly, and experimentally simple. A one-pot" Sonogashira/intramolecular hydroalkoxylation has also been achieved by this method. © 2008 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA."
