Selecting materials for optimum use in engineering components

The satisfactory design of engineering components is highly dependent on adequate information. Often this information is not available, is incomplete, or inaccurate, leading to assumptions being made, increasing the risk of possible failure. A considerable amount of data exists on the performance of materials, most of which if easily accessible facilitates design decisions. Unfortunately, these data are mostly discrete and selective, leading to gaps in knowledge, and therefore the ability to make informed decisions. This paper discusses the issues surrounding the use of available materials knowledge and its implication on the quality of design decisionmaking. (c) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
