A novel and versatile methodology for functionalization of conjugated polymers. Transformation of poly(3-bromo-4-hexylthiophene) via palladium-catalyzed coupling chemistry

A methodology for functionalization of conjugated polymers and transformation of poly(3-bromo-4-hexylthiophene) via palladium-catalyzed coupling chemistry was analyzed using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The 4-hydrogen of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) was susceptible to electrophilic substitution and can be quantitatively replaced with a halogen or nitro group. The results show that P3HT is efficiently functionalized using bromination and subsequent palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions.
