Spontaneous formation of macroporous monoliths of mesoporous manganese oxide crystals

A template-free route to mesoporous crystals based on the concurrent reduction and vapor-phase leaching of zinc from a ternary inorganic compound, which leads to the formation of macroporous monoliths of mesoporous manganese oxide crystals, was described. The monolith of MnO when examined at higher magnification reveals a new level of meosporosity. N2-sorption measurements were used to determine the surface area and pore size distribution of the hierarchically porous monolith. The results show that this route yields a material with self-affine pores that are related through crystallography.
