Cell thickness-induced ferrielectric phases in antiferroelectric/ferrielectric liquid crystals

摘要
The ferrielectric subphases of the liquid crystal MHPOBC [4-(1-methylheptyloxy-carbonyl) phenyl 4'-octyloxy-biphenyl 4-carboxylate] were examined by an optical retardation technique as functions of temperature, applied electric field, and cell thickness. We found that thinner cells exhibit more field-induced ferrielectric steps than do thicker cells, This appears to be a universal phenomenon for all ferrielectric subphases.
