Nonlinear materials offer a wavelength-agile means of protecting sensors against damage by pulsed lasers. The paper reviews the study and development of nonlinear protection materials within DERA. Materials under study include nonlinear absorbers, scatteres, and refractors, and a powerful suite of diagnostic techniques has permitted fundamental study of the underlying nonlinear processes.
