摘要
Two experiments examined how people updated their knowledge gained from reading newspaper stories. Participants in a related condition read an initial news story on one day. and then read two consecutive updates on two subsequent days. Participants in control conditions read the same stories as those in the related condition, but without having read the prior related news stories. Participants in the related condition constructed propositions faster than participants in the control conditions when the propositions had appeared in an earlier story, but no difference was found for new, previously unknown propositions (Experiment 1). When participants read for recall in Experiment 2, participants in the related condition read the new propositions slower than participants in the control conditions, but no difference was found for previously known propositions. The data suggest that participants update a previously constructed knowledge structure only when they take an active role in acquiring information. When readers take a less active role, the representation of previously read related text facilitate comprehension by priming related propositions. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
