Air transport services and the expansion of international tourism in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe's government has identified tourism as an area of potential growth and has proposed an expansion of the industry based primarily upon landscape and wildlife attractions. Access to Zimbabwe is provided by several international airlines but transport within the country is largely controlled by the national carrier Air Zimbabwe. State participation in tourism has been through the Tourist Development Corporation but the provision and management of tourist accommodation and related local services is largely within the private sector, This paper reviews the problems associated with tourist investment and marketing since independence in 1980, with particular reference to the role of Air Zimbabwe as a carrier on international and domestic routes.
