In situ transmission X-ray absorption fine structure analysis of the Li deintercalation process in Li(Ni0.5Co0.5)O2

摘要
The electronic structures of Ni and Co in a solid solution Lil-x(Ni0.5Co0.5)O-2 are clarified as a function of x for the first time by in situ transmission X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) analysis using an electrochemical cell of original design. XAFS analysis discloses that oxidation of the Ni ion in Lil-x(Ni0.5Co0.5)O-2 occurs immediately when the cell is charged, then stops at x = 0.5, whereas the oxidation of Co continues slowly to x = 0.8. The Jahn-Teller distortion of the NiO6 octahedra in Li(NiO0.5Co0.5)O-2 decreases with Li deintercalation. When the solid solution is used as a cathode of the Li secondary battery, the Ni ions play a principle role in the initial stage of the charging process. (C) 1998 The Electrochemical Society.
