Magnetism of nano-graphite and its assembly

摘要
We investigated the magnetism of activated carbon fibers with a three-dimensional disorder network of metallic nano-graphite domains, for which non-bonding pi -electron spins of edge origin are responsible. Spin-glass-like disordered magnetism appears in the vicinity of a heat-treatment-induced insulator-metal transition, due to the random strengths of the inter-nano-graphite antiferromagnetic interactions mediated by pi -conduction carriers. The magnetic moments of the localized spins show a steep drop at a threshold pressure in the adsorption isotherm of the water molecules in the micropores surrounding the nano-graphite domains. This is explained by the enhancement of the inter-graphene sheet exchange interaction by the effective pressure from the accommodated guest water molecules. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd.
