Purification of polymers produced by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using catalyst precipitation and microfiltration was investigated. ATRPs of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in toluene at 90°C were complete using the three ligands. The catalyst complexes consisted of CuIBr coordinated with PMDETA, HMETA, or OMPEHA in a one-to-one molar ratio. Results show that the precipitate thus formed is effectively retained by a 0.1 μm PTFE filter, up to 99.9% of the catalyst being removed from the polymer.
