Instability of brannerite cathode materials upon lithium insertion

Brannerite-type LiVMoO6, LiVWO6, Li0.8Zn0.2V1.2Mo0.8O6 and Li0.8Zn0.2V1.2W0.8O6 have been prepared and investigated as cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries. The materials initially intercalate between 1.6 and 2.4 lithium ions per formula unit with discharge capacities of 250, 160, 220 and 151 mAh g(-1), respectively. However, they are not suitable for secondary batteries. The intercalated brannerite phases are unstable; they undergo a partial decomposition to Li2MoO4 or similar products, which results in a continuous capacity fade with increasing cycle number or time at full discharge.
