An electron spin resonance analysis on gamma-irradiated poly(glycolic acid) and its copolymers with lactic acid

摘要
The effect of gamma radiation on poly(glycolic acid) and its copolymers with D,L-lactic acid has been examined using electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The G-values for radical formation in poly(glycolic acid) and the copolymers have been determined and values of G(R) congruent to 1.7 and G(R) congruent to 1.5 were obtained at 77 and 300 K, respectively. The G(R) results obtained for the copolymers fitted the Linear Additive Model. At 77 K the ESR spectrum of poly(glycolic acid) is composed of three components. One component has been assigned to the radical formed by loss of a H atom from the methylene group and the other two are formed as a result of chain scission and loss of the ester linkage.
