Vitamin D in adults: GRIO guidelines

Serum level of 25-(OH)-vitamin D is a reliable marker of vitamin D repletion and therefore medical management can be based on its evaluation at both on individual- and population-based level. In every situation when the therapeutic goal requires an optimal serum 25-(OH)-vitamin 0 level for on appropriate medical care, it is mandatory to measure baseline level in order to define loading and maintenance dosages of vitamin D supplementation. These situations include lack or very low sun exposure, falls, osteoporosis, diseases or treatments known to induce osteoporosis, chronic pathologies associated with vitamin D insufficiency. On the other hand, supplementation can be a systematic approach with no biological testing in all patients over 65 years old since the risk of low vitamin D levels is quite high while the risk of excessive dose is almost null in this population.
