Comparison of ZrB2-ZrC-SiC composites fabricated by spark plasma sintering and hot-pressing

Two densification methods, spark plasma sintering (SPS) and hot pressing (HP), for fabrication of ZrB2-ZrC-SiC composites were compared. The microstructure of as prepared materials were also compared. X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy were used to study the densification process and microstructure. It was found that the composite was fully densified by SPS at a temperature of 2100 °C for 2 min dwell time, while HP needed 1870 °C and 40 min of soaking time, and the assistance of Si3N3 as sintering aid. The microstructures were observed to be fine and homogeneous in both the processes.
