Novel existence of collective propagating mode and strongly localized mode in vitreous silica

摘要
Neutron scattering studies in a wide range of energy-momentum space of vitreous silica have revealed for the first time that an acoustic phonon dispersion in quasi-Brillouin zones coexists with a localized mode, so-called the Boson peak, which penetrates through the dispersion in the low-energy region. The coexistence of these modes is likely an origin of the peculiar thermal properties of glassy system. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
