摘要
Specific deformation of the double helix is often necessary for activity involving DNA, but the inflexibility of naked DNA means that proteins are needed to achieve this deformation. Complex nucleoprotein structures are formed, and the synergistic action of proteins within these complexes provides the necessary precision required for the control of transcription, DNA repair, replication and recombination, In many cases, small and abundant DNA-bending proteins are involved in these reactions. Recently, HMG1 ('high-mobility group') proteins and HU proteins have been identified that might perform such architectural functions in the nuclei and plastids of plant cells.
