Because it is clearly in the best interests of children with cystic fibrosis to be diagnosed early at <2 months, which can only be achieved routinely by newborn screening, it can be argued that this should be a human right. However, if more harm than good is likely, or if regional "readiness" does not exist, newborn screening should be deferred. (C) 2008 European Cystic Fibrosis Society. Published by Elsevier B.V.
