Impaired cognitive functioning is now recognized as a core feature of schizophrenia and one of the most important predictors of functioning across occupational, social, and adaptive domains. The study of cognition in schizophrenia continues to be a major interest, with new methods and data illuminating ever-more-precise deficits. This article reviews the literature on cognition in schizophrenia, focusing on the most recent data. It provides new insights into the study of the relationship between cognition and functional outcome and suggests future directions.
