Surface phonons in one-dimensional periodic superlattices

摘要：

We study theoretically the surface acoustic phonons propagating on semi-infinite, periodic AlAs/GaAs superlattices. The surface is either parallel (case A) or perpendicular (case B) to the layer interfaces. For the case A we find surface localized phonons below bulk band as well as inside bulk frequency gaps. For the case B the surface phonon branches exist only below the bulk band. The frequency gap and the folding effect of surface phonons are predicted at the boundary of mini-Brillouin zone. In both cases pseudosurface (PS) phonons are found inside the bulk band. Focusing characteristics of ballistically propagating surface and PS phonons are also studied. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V.
