Binding energy of impurities and excitons in the quasi-one-dimensional electron gas: Screening effects for oscillator confinement

We generalized the random-phase approximation for the quasi-one-dimensional electron gas including exchange and correlation by considering the effects of the local-field correction. We calculate the binding energy between screened test-charges q(1) and q(2) as a function of the electron density. For test-charges we discuss attractive (q(1) = e and q(2) = -e) and repulsive (q(1) = -e and q(2) = -e) charges. We also calculate the binding energy between a test-charge (q(1) = +/-e) and an electron (q(2) = -e) as a function of the electron density. Our results describe bound states of impurities and excitons in quantum wires. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
