This article discusses pharmacologic therapies for generalized anxiety disorder, including benzodiazepines; tricyclic antidepressants; serotonin reuptake inhibitors; azapirones; and novelty antianxiety agents, including venlafaxine, nefazodone, and others. The long-term pharmacologic management of patients with generalized anxiety disorder, the effects of comorbidity (especially depression) on the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder, and treatment resistance also are discussed.
