Anisotropy-induced liquid-crystal configurational transitions

摘要
We determined the orientational order of a liquid crystal imbedded in a randomly interconnected porous material. Despite the randomness of the host, well-defined liquid-crystal director configurations were found. With decreased confining size there are changes in the host material anisotropy. The confined liquid-crystal structure is first due to the NMR field and later by the random surfaces. At intermediate sizes, field and surfaces begin to compete to align the liquid crystal and a configurational transition occurs. Disordering effects set in at the smallest sizes [S0031-9007(98)07194-4].
