Synergy between silica and polyoxyethylene surfactants in the formation of O/W emulsions

The stability of O/W emulsions stabilised with a combination of colloidal silica (Ludox) and non-ionic POE surfactant was investigated for a range of surfactants and two oils, one paraffin, the other vegetable. A range of HLB values was covered and stabilities were compared with those of emulsions prepared with silica absent. The effect on stability of the silica/surfactant ratio and quantity of silica/surfactant was also investigated. Freeze fracture transition electron microscopy showed that the silica particles were arranged mainly as close-packed monolayers. Rheological measurements were used to investigate emulsion structure and were compared with similar data obtained for silica/surfactant Aocs. A strong emulsification synergy between silica and non-ionic surfactant was demonstrated. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
