Simultaneous combustion synthesis (thermal explosion mode) and extrusion of nickel aluminides

摘要
The reactive extrusion of nickel aluminide intermetallic alloys using the thermal explosion mode of ignition was discussed. The method allowed the whole compact to simultaneously react and promote a more uniform temperature distribution prior to extrusion. The compact temperature was monitored and recorded using a K-type thermocouple inserted into the bottom of the specimen. The product obtained using this method is found to be highly dense and with a refined microstructure.
