摘要
Some of the factors that need to be considered to distinguish between data collected for surveillance and data collected as part of a Web site's operation are discussed. Efforts were made to distinguish these two sets of data by selecting specific Web elements that were used only for gathering information and were recognized automatically. These elements included Web bugs that were protected channels between a Web site and a third-party data collector. Web bugs were related to third-party content and surveillance capabilities and were located close to home pages of Web sites. A number of researchers considered several changes introduced in Web bug practices by comparing results from a number of samples and concluded that these bugs had the potential to appear on different pages of a Web site.
