Stashed in the genomes of microorganisms that thrive in extreme environments are the recipes for enzymes that go about their metabolic business at extreme temperature or pH - conditions common to industrial processing. Not surprisingly, the race to reap these enzymes in on, as chemical and pharmaceutical industries increasingly search for catalysts that are kind to the environment.
