Crystal field studies on magnetic and nuclear properties of Yb2Ti2O7

A rigorous crystal field (CF) calculation was adopted for the first time to analyse consistently the observed experimental results of average magnetic susceptibility and Mossbauer spectra of Yb2Ti2O7, thereby resolving the previous discrepancy in determining the values of the CF parameters by earlier workers. The values of the CF parameters were found to be A(20) = 420.0, A(40) = 440.0, A(60) = -280.0, A(43) = 500.0, A(63) = -150, A(66) = -150 (all in cm(-1)). The saturated magnetization M-sat and g-values were calculated and found to be respectively M-sat = 2.48 x 10(5) A/m, g(parallel to) = 3.428 and g(perpendicular to) = 0.0. The quadrupolar interactions at different temperatures were determined for Yb-170 in the titanate host and found to be in excellent agreement with the experimental data.
