This paper outlines the information derived from a socio-economic based survey of household waste characteristics undertaken in the city of Dublin, Ireland. Gross annual waste arisings in Dublin are estimated to lie in the range 89024 tonnes to 112 320 tonnes with a mean value of 100 000 tonnes, Specific waste generation rates in the city have declined from 0.69 kg capita(-1) day(-1) in the late 1970s to the present level of 0.53 kg capita(-1) day(-1). The principal reason for this decline probably lies in a greatly reduced dependence over the past 12-15 years on the use of solid fuels for domestic heating.
