摘要
In 1990, the University of Chicago was funded by the NSF to develop affordable adaptive optics systems for astronomy using laser guide stars. As part of this work we developed our own deformable mirror, wavefront sensing and control technology and built the ChAOS adaptive optics system (1). This instrument is now mounted at one of the bent-Cass focal positions of the ARC 3.5 meter telescope at Apache Point Observatory and has been operated for two years. Most of the problems we encountered were due to operation of the ao system on the telescope - problems of telescope vibration and mirror figure, acquisition and tracking of the target with limited held of view detectors, running the system at sub-zero temperatures, or lack of adequate calibration and diagnostics. These operational issues become more and more important as higher order systems are deployed on modern telescopes.
