Acetate on Cu(110): Evidence for long-range intermolecular interactions and molecular-induced restructuring of a metal surface

摘要
Low-energy diffraction (LEED), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) have been used to study acetate-induced structures on Cu(110) surfaces. LEED and STM show that highly-ordered ((-1)(4),(1)(4)) and ((11)(4-4)) domains are formed, indicative of long-range interactions. These domains coexist with regions of up-down steps. LEED beam exposure results in both degradation of the LEED patterns and an increase in the up-dowm regions. These results show that molecular adasorption can result in drastic restructuring of metal surfaces.
