By monitoring efferent cardiac sympathetic nerve activity (CSNA) directly in a conscious animal we observed, for the first time, that ventricular fibrillation (VF) following myocardial infarction (MI) was preceded by a paroxysm of CSNA which was not baroreflex-modulated. This observation has potential therapeutic implications.
