In crystalline 4-cyano-4'-ethynylbiphenyl and 4-ethynyl-4'-nitrobiphenyl, molecules are connected with the hitherto unreported C equivalent to C-H ... N equivalent to C and C equivalent to C-H ... O2N supramolecular synthons to form linear arrays.
